Want a More Efficient Watering System?

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Irrigations System

An excellent way to avoid overwatering is by installing either rain or soil moisture sensors which will override your automatic watering system. A rain sensor will sense rainfall, and once a designated amount of water is detected, it will shut down any scheduled irrigation. Rain sensors are quite small, and are cheaper, easier to install and to maintain than soil moisture sensors. These however, are more accurate than rain sensors, due to the fact they can detect moisture in the root system. They are more exact when it comes to measuring how much water your plants are getting, which offers greater water savings. But, they are complicated to install and manage.

SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

  • Sprinklers are able to cover larger areas.

  • Manual sprinklers need you to open the valve, time the watering and then shut the flow off.

  • Automatic sprinklers come with programmable controllers.

  • Make sure that you set automatic sprinklers properly and adjust to condition changes.

  • Water early to reduce the evaporation rate.

  • If water runs off, split your watering times into multiple sessions.

  • Turn off your system when there is a great deal of rain.

DRIP IRRIGATION

  • This is better for smaller yards or for watering single plants.

  • Drip irrigation is effective at supplying 1 – 4 gallons of water an hour directly to the soil.

  • The benefit of a drip irrigation over sprinklers is there is very little water loss because of evaporation or runoff.

  • It’s especially good for mulched areas, as it can soak into the soil without washing the mulch away.
